I didn’t have any expectations for this film when it came out.Wasn’t excited at all. I only went to see this because for some reason i know Marvel movies are going to be garbage but I feel like I have to see every one.Thor is really no exception. It’s not a bad movie but it wasn’t great either. Now before I really get into what I thought about this film piece by piece let me just say that 3D movies are stupid. Not only is it irritating to my eyes most of the parts in the movie you could see fine without wearing the glasses.I think in only 3-4 scenes was it actually necessary to wear them.
My biggest problem is that I felt like I was watching a movie about a character I had never heard of before. They didn’t do much to create a familiar atmosphere of Asgard. It never felt like they were in a place where gods dwelled. It was too high tech. It didn’t feel like something out of norse mythology. The casting was business as usual. It seems like Marvel is trying to fill a quota or they are victims of affirmative action on every movie. Heimdall and Hogun are terrible casting choices. Not only was Heimdall black as a Norse God but his costume design looks nothing like any version of Heimdall i’ve ever seen. He’s worn different costumes since his creation and the one in this film looks nothing like any of them and Hogun was just some random asian guy. He didn’t have the signature handlebar mustache or a recognizable costume. Casting for the other characters was pretty good.
Despite the few bad ones. I enjoyed the costume design in this movie.I loved how Chris Hemsworth looked as Thor.I like the way they created his under armor so that it actually looks like armor and not just a silver colored garment. Sif, Loki, Fandral, etc. all looked really good. I love the way they handled Loki’s helmet.
Story wise of course they changed alot to make the story more modern and to shorten Thor’s origin so that it fits in one movie but for the most part it was fine. The acting was good, I like Chris Hemsworth as Thor. Probably the best main character casting choice since Iron Man. The fight with the Destroyer was epic. The best part of this movie is the beginning when Thor takes the Warrior’s 3, Loki, & Sif to go fight the Frost Giants. That was possibly one of the best fight scenes I’ve seen in a Marvel movie. I loved how they handled Thor’s use of Mjolnir. That was probably the only part where I felt I was watching a movie about Thor.
Overall it’s not a bad movie. They had a good premise. There are some great elements but there are just some unforgivable mistakes and I just felt there needed to be more time spent on Asgard.
- The costume designs were very well done.
- The Casting was great for the most part. Some roles were off but there were very few.Chris Hemsworth was a good Thor.
- The story; although not exactly like the comics, didn’t have so many drastic changes that that it became a problem.
- The combat was depicted very well.Ioved the action scenes in this movie.
- The look of the Frost Giants. Not what I expected.
- Race changes piss me off to no end. They are completely unnecessary, especially in a setting such as this where race actually matters.
I give this film a
7 out of 10
