So basically before this film came out I had no expectations for it.I felt the same about Thor and I actually enjoyed it.After actually watching this film the same event occurred.I had no expectations for it and I was surprised.First of all I didn’t like the fact that Chris Evans would be Captain America. We had already seen him as the Human Torch and in most of his roles he seems to play characters that are more like Johnny Storm than Steve Roger.Evans surprised me though. He was really good as Captain America. He kept the quips to a minimum and really made himself into Steve Rogers.Even the parts where hey CG’d his head on a smaller body and he was laying the much weaker and less skilled Steve Rogers before the SSS, those parts were just as good as the parts where he was Captain America.I really liked how they focused on Steve’s personality in his sense of duty.Of course since this is a Marvel Studios production they took better care of their character.
I think the first thing I noticed that I didn’t really like about the film though was the scenes that depicted how they tried to use Cap in propaganda before he went off to war and started busting heads.I knew where they were going with it, it just doesn’t seem like something the United States would do.The fact that he had come out with a comic that people were reading is more likely what they would have done but It’s not really a huge deal.
I’m kind of split about the costume.I like the fact that they made his mask a helmet instead of an actual master that’s part of his costume.I like that they made the feathers on the side of his mask part of the helmet instead of like actual feathers.I think that would have made it cheesy. The top half of his costume looks pretty good, the gloves are kind of weird though. They seem a little bit too big like cleaning gloves almost. In short parts of the costume look like they were changed so they would fit better in the movie and other parts just looked rushed and don’t look as polished as the rest.
Of course we all know the story of Captain America. There are a few changes made between film and comic but nothing really huge.I think for the most part the casting was really good. The atmosphere was well set by the designs of the costumes and environments.I just want to know what the Director was thinking when he gave Neal McDonough the role of Dum Dum Dugan? That’s almost as bad as when he played M.Bison in Street Fighter. He just wasn’t right for that part AT ALL.
To sum it up, Captain America was better than I expected.Chris Evans was an acceptable Steve Rogers. He exceeded my expectations. The action scenes were pretty good, which is partly the reason I even go and see superhero related films.I want to see some action, and for the most part the costumes between Cap and Red Skull and everyone else were well done.I didn’t see anyone and go..”WTF IS THAT!”
- Marvel took the character seriously. Although I wasn’t thrilled with the casting, everyone stepped up and played their parts.
- The film stayed true to the story, no unnecessary changes, just whatever would make the story viable.
- I can’t get over Chris Evans as Captain America. He played the part well. He’s a good actor but I just don’t get Steve Rogers from him.
I give Captain America an
